Food for Thought Friday #3

Friday, October 27th, 2006

I have a pounding headache, I misjudged the door frame when getting in the car a couple days ago and whacked my forehead right into it. I explain this, because my recipe is really simple this week. But, people rave over it and it’ll be good for parties. :)

Queso Dip

1/2 pound of ground beef
1 packet of chili mix (I prefer French’s Chili-O myself, but use what you like!)
1 can of Rotel tomatoes
1 box of Velveeta (I think it’s the 16 oz one. The big one, not the gimpy little one!)
Milk

1. Brown the ground beef then mix the chili mix in with the meat. Use as much or as little of the mix as you like, remembering that it will get a little bit diluted with the cheese.
2. Cube the cheese (yes, go ahead and eat a piece or two of the cheese, I always do!) into a crock pot.
3. Mix in the seasoned meat and can of Rotel. Crock on low until cheese is melted, stirring occasionally.
4. Use milk to thin the dip out should it be too thick.
5. Serve with chips of your choosing.

You can also do this in a double boiler if pressed for time. I’m sure that you can microwave it too, but I have an aversion to microwaved meat so I’ve never tried it.

Kristie over at Slacker-Moms-R-Us started this weekly recipe meme, so go visit her and check all the other fine culinary delights people are whipping up! :)

Friday’s Feast – #117

Friday, October 27th, 2006

It’s a potluck of info about you! Join us here.

Appetizer – Create a new candle scent.

I would think that most conventional scents are covered by the myriad of candle companies. But, this one will make you go, “Mmmmm!”…or, “Ewwwww!”. I think there’s no middle ground: Pancakes w/melted butter and Maple Syrup with a hint of crispy bacon. We’ll call it “Morning Breakfast”.

SoupName one way you show affection to others.

I’m trying to stray from the obvious. How about watching horror movies with my husband and daughter even though it scares the bejeesus out of me and traumatizes me?

Salad – What is your favorite writing instrument?

A mechanical pencil with .5mm very soft lead.

Main Course – If you were given $25 to spend anywhere online, from which site would you buy?

Amazon.com.

Dessert Are you dressing up for Halloween? If so, what are you going to be?

No. :( ::goes into her corner and pouts::

Thursday Thirteen – Edition 10/64

Thirteen Things TiggerPrr Loves about Halloween

I am almost positive that this isn’t an original idea for this week. Hopefully, my list will be original in some small way though. :)

1. Looking at the little kids in their costumes when they ring my doorbell. No, not in some weird sort of pervy way, but in a, “Gosh, I wish I could make Ashlyn be 4 again so I could dress her up all cute and in some form of animal ears” way.
2. “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. I can’t really commit to whether I think this is a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie, so I just watch it both times of the year. Apparently, neither can the movie companies that release movies as the 3-D version started last week and ends its run around Christmas.
3. “Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” This might be the cutest movie, ever. EVER! When those bunnies are howling at the moon, I had little cartoon hearts flowing from my head, I just know it.
4. Dressing up in costumes and being a little ghoulish. I haven’t had cause to dress up for several years though. :( One of my best memories was of my freshman year in college, the “gang” all dressed up and we went haunted house visiting. Way fun. :)
5. I detest scary movies. But on Halloween, it’s ok to watch “Halloween”. My daughter hadn’t seen any of the Halloween movies as of last year, so we went on a mad marathon of them. I was scared silly, but watched them anyway. How’s that for a good Mom? Or am I a bad Mom for letting her watch them? I digress.
6. When I am employed, usually in Human Resources. I love thinking of cool Halloween treats to give my employees. Since I am not presently employed, I don’t get this pleasure. I’ll have to make a treat for Hubby’s co-workers instead.
8. Helping Ashlyn choose a costume. OK, she’s 17 and I can’t make her dress in furry little animal costumes. So, it’s not the same fun as it used to be, but it’s a cooler fun. I just have to wade through all the hussy costumes they have out now in adult sizes.
9. To me, Halloween is the doorway to the holiday season. I love the holiday season since it involves preparing savory and nutritious meals for your family and friends. Well, savory anyway.
10. Halloween Candy. This is self-explanatory. ::Licks chocolate from her fingers::
11. Dressing the cats up in costumes. OK, I haven’t done this yet. But I want to and I know I’d love it even if they wouldn’t.
12. Decorating the house all Halloweeny. Tigger and Snoopy are prominent! I can’t wait ’til Halloween day so we can put those up. And of course, the family of Jack-o-lanterns one for each of us, including the cats. But, since they don’t have opposable thumbs, we have to paint/carve them on their behalf.
13. No Halloween is complete without a viewing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”

It’s here…maybe this old dog can learn some new tricks!

Well, I was growing tired of not understanding how this whole website thing actually works. Actually, I was growing tired of feeling like an idiot everytime I wanted to do something wondered if it was even possible to tweak my site a certain way. Not to mention, I’m sure Yoshi scratches his head sometimes and wonders, “Girl, why don’t you just get it?”

So, I decided to get a book. It just arrived from Amazon and I’m stoked! One of two things will happen…I’ll actually learn a few things and at least understand what happens in the code well enough to sort of read it and do a few things OR I’ll blow my website up and Yoshi will kill me, causing me to burn the book and be very sad.

Wish me luck. If you see some wonky changes here and there, it’s probably just me tooling around.

So, I’m a terrible mom…sort of.

About a week ago, Ashlyn got a little rash on her neck. After asking if that’s the only spot on her body that’s broken out like that, I’m thinking it’s a mild case of hives. I give her some benedryl and some cream to put on it. No biggie. It’s going through what I think it a healing phase, still no biggie. “It itches Mom”, she says to me. I hand her more cream, “Just put this on it.”

She goes off on Sunday with the rest of the golf team to the State Championships, which her team won. Good for them!

So she’s at school yesterday, and the school nurse calls me. “I think she has Shingles. You might want to take her to the Dr.” I had planned on taking her to one of those walkin clinics that evening, but apparently the pain got unbearable at school. Sure enough, it is Shingles. It hadn’t even crossed my mind that was a possibility since it’s caused by the same virus that causes Chicken Pox and she had those when she was 4. I thought she was immune.

So, I’m a terrible mom, for letting that go, but it looked just like the hives I get. ::sigh::
