When do women “become old”?

I was sitting here, in our gloomy weather trying to think of something to blog about rather than my usual Ashlyn shenanigans (which there haven’t been many since she made that golf team, I have barely seen her). I picked up a magazine, and with much interest started to read an article about “The Perfect Hairstyle for your Face”. Mind you, I have really long, straight hair so dark brown it’s almost black. It is cut in layers so it has bounce and movement. Much to my delight that’s how they said it should be. Then I read the sentence that stopped me dead in my tracks: “Even if you’re over 35, you can wear it long. Classic beauties like Jane Seymour and Demi Moore are chic examples.”

EVEN!? Hrrrrrmph. I am not only 35, but I have 3, almost 4, years experience. Since when should age dictate what does and doesn’t look good if a person feels and looks good wearing it? Half of the battle in looking good, is feeling confident about it. That’s the point I try to drive home to Ashlyn. She’s beautiful, I think deep down she knows it, but for some reason (::cough, cough:: teenager) she feels the need to protest and point out her flaws. I keep telling her that other people, especially the male variety, can almost feel if you have an aire of confidence about how you look and many find that trait more atttractive than flawless beauty.

I think I’m aging nicely, I’m going to be 39 in a few months and when Ashlyn and I go out, we often get mistaken for sisters. So, either I’m looking pretty good…or my god, she looks old for a 17 year old. I’m thinking I look good! (We’ll go with that answer anyway!) }:)>

I do however, see one thing as a sign of aging, or maybe it’s maturity: The day Cosmopolitan magazine became annoyingly boring and I cancelled the remainder of my long standing subscription, and exchanged that for Good Housekeeping, Redbook, Woman’s Day, etc. They’re much more interesting to me now. You can only read “100 Ways to Satisfy Your Man!” so many times before it gets to be “yadda yadda yadda”…but new recipes, craft ideas and coupons? THAT sounds good, sign me up.

So, I say ::raising fist in the air:: don’t let a stupid magazine tell you at what age you become old. I don’t ever want to become old, and as long as I stay young in my heart, I won’t. Just make sure I get plenty of recipes and coupons. ;)
