Fellow Bloggers…your opinion please!

Still being fairly new to blogging, I’m curious about blogging nettiquette. In your opinion, is it rude or otherwise in poor behaviour to blogroll someone without asking first or do you welcome people linking to your individual sites because it theoretically brings you more traffic?

I’ve often found blogs that I think are interesting or are written by people I find interesting and I’d like to go back, so I’ve mostly been bookmarking them. I’m just curious how the rest of you guys feel about this.

Speak up! Also, is there a “blogging standard” or nettiquette website somewhere?

I just link to whomever I like and I’m flattered when I find that my site has been linked by someone else. I think in the over five years of having my blog, only once has anyone asked if it was ok to add my site to their link list. I don’t know about the proper nettiquette of it, but I figure if someone has a problem with my linking them, they’ll ask to be removed.

I blogroll sites I like. I think asking someone to blogroll you sets you up for hurt feelings.

But I was a librarian–I like referring people to good information.

I feel that being added to the blogroll of a fan/visitor is high praise and an honor. Feel free to link to me …

I agree with Daisy. I feel like my blog is too random to belong to too many blogrolls, though…lol

I joined bloglines..it tells me when my favorite sites are updated, and that way I can have as many people on it as I want..No one knows who I read by me, and no one gets there feelings hurt if they are listed on the blog itself..It is faster than just bookmarking and you only go to the page when a new post is done..saves a lot of time…

I don’t think you have to ask someone to link to their blog. You can just do it with no worries. It’s a compliment to be linked so why wouldn’t someone want you to link to them? That’s how I see it. But good question. All this blogettiquette can be confusing! :)

  7. Tink Says:

I don’t mind if people link me, on the contrary! It’s a compliment. No need to ask. On technorati.com you can see who links to your blog.

I use Bloglines too, when I want to find quick updates to my favorite blogs. If someone has a problem linking they’d ask to be removed. It’s always nice to be asked, but I not necessary. Good question!
You have a very nice blog BTW.

Wow, what an interesting (and polite!) question. I hadn’t really thought about it, and tend to just add blogs to my blogroll via bloglines (which I highly recommend) at will. I suppose asking/notifying is nice though. I’m certainly honored if someone blogrolls me!

    Thanks for visiting my T13!

To answer your Q, I don’t typically ask people before I blogroll them. I just do it. Whenever I discover that somebody has added me to their blogroll I’m usually flattered, not at all annoyed :)

I am always really excited whenever anyone adds me to their blogroll. I feel like I am doing a good job providing entertaining blog content for my visitors!

Anyone can set up their own rules on blogging. The only rule I have is “honesty”
I’ve asked anyone if it ok to link to anther blogg or I’ve never asked someone if they would linked me to their blog.
In all honesty when I see my blog on someone blog it makes me happy

  13. Katie Says:

I like to anybody whose blog I enjoy, and it makes me happy to see somebody linking me.

Thank you to all who’ve responded so far. There seems to be a little confusion that I might have been asking if it was also ok to ask others to link to your own blog. Oh no! I’d never dream of doing that even if it WAS ok!

I just didn’t want to upset anyone who’s blog I enjoy reading if I linked to them and should have asked.
