tiggerprr takes on American Idol Top 10 Boys
Wednesday, February 28th, 2007The (mostly) suckfest continued this week with me wondering a lot of times if the judges were hearing the same performances I did. Here’s how I felt:
1) Phil Stacey - “Missing You” by John Waite - I actually think this guy has a great voice but it’s like he’s afraid to really sing until the last two lines of his songs. He’s got to get over this or become like Ace Young did for me last year. Starts out pretty strong, and initially thought to be a contender to being a “what could have been” in my eyes. Also, the tempo was a smidge too fast so it felt, to me, like he was sort of racing through the song.
(tiggerprr side note: God help any of these boys if they start trying to do the Constantine creepy eyes at the camera thing. I liked Constantine except for that stuff, that’s just creepy…and weird!)
2) Jared Cotter - “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye - I agree with Bond’s assessment that Jared’s voice is a little high for this song, it needs to be nearly growled IMO. I like him though. Just needs to do something more.
3) AJ Tabaldo - “Feelin’ Good” by a host of people since the dinosaurs roamed the earth including Michael Buble - Is it just me, or are these people treating tonight like it’s “Songs from Previous Lifetimes” theme night? While he was pleasant enough…it wasn’t great to me. At all. Yet, the judges praised the crap out of him? I’m just waiting for Simon to say “Well, it’s not that you’re good, it’s that you suck the least.”
4) Sanjaya Malakar - Ugh, send this kid home. Period. Oh, and I loved how last week he said he got his GED so he doesn’t have to worry about school anymore. I assume that his parents let him do that so he would be able to do Idol without having to do the school tutoring thing they have to have the school age contestants do. Ummm…WTH kind of parent allows their kid to get a lesser HS credential(I don’t care what malarky anyone tries to sell you - I am in HR, GEDs are viewed as lesser than a full HS diploma in the “real” world.) because of a reality show when their kid is honestly not talented enough to win the thing. You can kid yourself and you can lie to your kids, but you know…deep down you know if they really have a shot or not. BTW, I’m being honest here, sure the kid is a cutie pie with nice doey brown eyes…but this isn’t a pageant.
5. Chris Sligh - “Trouble” by Ray LaMontagne - First, let me join Bond in expressing my shock that this guy is married. ::GASP:: OK, whew that’s over with. Ummm, this guy totally reminds me of pre-weight loss Jack Osborne, without the British accent and profanity laden speech. It’s hard to get past that; however… this guy can sing, or is it that he sucks less than most of the others? I digress. I don’t know why people don’t learn from previous seasons….I would NEVER do a song any other contestant did, particularly last year’s winner.
6. Nick Pedro - “Fever” by countless artists also since the time of the dinosaurs - OK, I think Nick has potential to do some good singing. But WTH is with the song choices so far? Pullllease!
7. Blake Lewis - “Virtual Insanity” by Jamaroqui - I really want to hate this guy. I hate beatboxing a LOT. But I cannot deny, I love it when he sings. He tossed in some beatboxing with a bit of scatting…I cringed, but it was over in a second and I loved the rest of the song. To me, his was the best of the night. I’d still be ok if he never beatboxed again…but those dang judges…they keep encouraging it!
8. Brandon Rogers - Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper - Umm one of my favorite songs ever. His performance was fine to me…but not spectactular. I really like Brandon, I think he’s got some awesome potential to wow me. I wish he’d get on with it. I know he can.
9. Chris Richardson - “Geek in the Pink” by Jason Mraz - Never heard of this song before. The title makes me think of Skeezix the Cat rather than pay attention to him. This guy needs a boyband. He’s one of the best of the boys, but IMO nothing special.
10. Sundance Head - Mustang Sally by Countless people - most memorable to me, is Hootie and the Blowfish during encores at their concerts - Ummm…as I said in comments on Bond’s blog, any jackass can get up there and sing “Ride, Sally, Ride” over, and over, and over, and over. I need to hear more of a song than that and 1 or two sentences…I don’t like him. Not. At. All.
tiggerprr’s predictions of who’s going home??
Should go home:Sanjaya Malakar and Sundance Head
Will Go Home:Sanjaya Malakar and either Nick Pedro or Jared Cotter. Unless the speed dialing bubblehead girls vote like mad for Sanjaya’s doey eyes…then I’d say Nick and Jared will be going “Home”.
So…here’s what I think will happen…there’s a couple ok folks…but for the most part…when the Top 24 becomes the top 12…we’re going to see a lot of boys going home in the first few weeks.
