Ashlyn Update v2.0
Well, I’ve not blogged about it yet…but…Ashlyn did in fact obliterate her ACL. She is going to have to have reconstructive knee surgery where they will take a graft off her patellar (kneecap) tendon and bone and use that to reconstruct her ACL.
We scheduled the surgery, and it’s happening on April 13th. Yes, that’s Friday the 13th. I am a little apprehensive to schedule it for that day but otherwise, she’ll have to wait until the 19th. The reason for the delay is that she’ll have to have good range of motion in the knee prior to surgery otherwise her knee would be as stiff as it is today. She can barely bend it and can’t straighten it out at all. Wish her luck and a speedy recovery and hope that I can resist the urge to stuff a rabbit and all four of his feet in her hospital nightgown as she’s going into surgery. I wonder if they will sedate Moms too?
I feel particularly bad and guilty. I made her go out for track this year, because her grades seem to be better when she’s involved in activities. So if I hadn’t made her go out for the team, this wouldn’t have happened.
She is done for the track season, and will be done with any athletics for approx. 6 months after the surgery. Fortunately, golf can be resumed a little earlier than that so she’ll still be able to be on the golf team.
I wish I could take the injury on and have the surgery for her. I hate this. And before she comments on this post and tells you…yes, I cried in the Dr.’s office when we got the news. Not a crazy undignified sobbing/wailing…just tears down my face and heavy guilt in my heart.

Oh, I’m so sorry for you and for Ashlyn! As a mother, I know how you feel about your child being hurt, and I absolutely can relate to the guilt (remind me to tell you about my son’s hospitalization when he was 6 months old – sigh…)
You both are in my thoughts and prayers – stay strong!

Don’t blame yourself. Accidents happen. You can even get hurt at the mall. For instance, once I ran into a store window. It didn’t require surgery, but I saw a lot of stars.
Oh, good luck and speedy recovery.

I have been through a catastrophic sports injury. They just happen. You aren’t responsible. She’ll heal and be good as new.
Remember – a positive attitude is critical during rehab.
Take care.

I hope her recovery is as easy and painless as possible

As a long-time runner, let me tell you that these things happen some times. Women do tend to have more knee problems — they think it’s hormone related — but I know people with knee problems from swimming.
You can’t live life afraid of living, because that’s just a living death. I hope she gets better quick!

Yes, Don’t blame yourself. Like Rob said, these things happen. I can’t believe though she’ll need to wait over a month for surgery. I imagine she’s in alot of pain.
Wishing Ashlyn a speedy recovery!

Thanks guys! Now if I can just get Mom to stop kicking me uner the table…we’ll be in business*.

Ash, its gonna be fine, though that was a bit more then a scope. Knee surgeries are a dime a dozen now adays. Wait, that sounds awful. Well, hmm speedy recovery then and Im sure Mia Hamm has blown out both her knees or something.
Prrr, stop kicking yourself, she would have gone out for some sort of sport or activity some other time and the same thing could have happened later. And she obviously has not lost her sense of humor.

You shouldn’t feel guilty. You had no way of knowing this would happen. We can’t make our kids not participate for fear of getting hurt. I’m sure she will be just fine.
LOL your comment just made me realize, I sounded like Nemo’s Dad in Finding Nemo. I’d never want her not to participate, just feel bad that when I made her do a sport, she hurt herself doing it.

Don’t feel bad!!! Things happen. Plus, I’m sure she’ll make sure that you make up for it giving all sorts of things. Favorite movies on DVD, snacks, magazines, permanent custody of the remote control….

Oh, I hate that for Ashlyn, but you are NOT to blame. She could have fallen down the stairs at school (if they have stairs at school) or had any number of things happen to her that had nothing to do with anything you encouraged. Accidents happen. She’ll come through surgery with flying colors, I’m sure!
Tell Ashlyn to milk this for all it’s worth!

Yup…you already knew to stop feeling guilty and now every one you know is telling you. So..methinks ya oughta listen! This will be a bonding experience for both of you. Make it all work for the good ladies~!
She’s got a sense of humor just like her momma….that’s a good thing~!
